Caregivers
Daycares/Nannies
Trusting another to care for your child/children can be challenging, and at the very least, can cause some anxiety. Firstly it takes deciding where, who, and what type of care best suites your needs, but also the costs that are incurred. Then even if you find the perfect person, the perfect situation that you can afford....how long is the waiting list? Unfortunately, many parents have to send their children to Daycares based solely on availability.
If you are a Daycare, what sets you above and beyond the others? Does your staff have specific training in Positive Behaviour Support to ensure consistency, proactive strategies, and a systematic approach that ensures the best results for supporting Socially Responsible Children? Does your Daycare offer parenting courses that coincide with the skills and strategies that both home and school could implement in order to support a positive link between both environments?
* Any Daycare requesting workshops for their entire staff, recieve 50% off for a 2 hour parenting workshops.
* For any parent whose Daycare requests a workshop in training their staff, on your recommendation, will receive one free hour consult for your family.
Nanny (live in or out)
Again, the trust for having a stranger care for your child can cause many challenges. Sometimes it can take many different nannies before finding one, that not only is wonderful with your child/children, but also one that fits into your families dynamics and situation. Again, cost can be a factor. If you have a certain budget that must be met in order for it to make sense to work, paying a low wage may result in a less qualified person. That said, paying top dollar doesn't guarantee a fully trained nanny either. So, what's the answer? Ensure that your nanny is specifically trained to do the best job possible for you and your child/children.
Whatever the choice, it is absolutely imperative that you first and foremost have the best care for your child, no matter what type of care you decide that works best for you, your child/children and family. Remember, just because a person has been a nanny for years does not determine they have the best training that can be provided. Likewise, just because a Daycare is licensed, does not determine the care is superior, and will meet your child's specific needs. Most importantly, both home and the Caregivers need to be in sync and cohesive.
Important questions to be asked:
- What are the specific strategies that are used with your child/children to encourage appropriate choices and decision making?
- Are they consistent with your parenting style?
- What are the proactive strategies for encouraging appropriate behaviour?
- How do they correct inappropriate behaviour?
- What type of problem solving skills and strategies are being taught to ensure independence?
- Are they building skills for your child/children's; social, emotional, and academic growth that will help them in life?
- Is there consistency in dealing with your child/children?
- Are you using the same strategies to ensure consistency?
Working together, we can ensure consistency between home and caregivers. If your caregiver is a friend or family member, this can be accommodated as well.
"Remember, children in daycare, or with a nanny, may spend as much or more time with those giving care than with you as the parents...ensuring they are trained as well as possible, trained to be consistent with your values and beliefs regarding your child's upbringing, may be one of the best investments you can do for your child/children."
